Setae 9-M single and setae 10-M with 6 branches or more are diagnostic. Clypeal setae 2-C wide apart (diagnostic for the Cellia subgenus).

The An. multicolor larva is close to An. gambiae s.l. from which it differs by its setae 10-M feathered (not simple).
